James Hargest bombs away - Week 6

The James Hargest First V women's team made a statement in Gore in Week Six of the Southland A Grade Basketball competition, draining 13 three-pointers on its way to an impressive 93-80 victory over Eastern Dev.

Maddie Tinnock led the way for Hargest finishing with 29 points, including 16 in the first quarter and was ably supported by four of her team mates, Holly Cunliffe, Laura Jackson, Kiana Collett and Sophie Hika who all scored in double figures in a strong team effort. Eastern was paced by Ella Harrex who finished with 28.

In the other women's game played at ILT Stadium Southland, Kelvin Hotel Rogues had to dig deep in the final quarter to come from behind to beat Razzmatazz 62-55. Razzmatazz belied their position on the table and rode the hot hands of Tyra Dunn and Bay-Leigh Johnson (both finished with 23 points) to take a four point leads into the final break. But the experienced Rogues' heads prevailed as Sarah Hamilton (21), Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit (14) and Jessy Raukawa (10) closed the game down.

In the Men's competition The Turbos lead from buzzer to buzzer to beat Kelvin Hotel Xmen 88-77 and improve to 3-1 on the season. Morgan Waihirere followed a similar script to last week, catching fire early to drain six from beyond the arc in the first quarter on his way to a game high 31. That helped Turbos to a 32-18 lead after the first ten minutes.

Xmen ate into the lead steadily over the next two quarters to close the margin up to as little as six points before Turbos closed the door in the final quarter. Joel Fleck added 19 with Tevita Latu and Daniel Rautahi both finishing with 15. Tyler Hawke did his best to keep Xmen in the game with a team high 30 on the night.

Elsewhere the form guide held. Magic's unbeaten stretch was never threatened against MPMW Harleys Whero in a 103-48 final score, set up by a 32-5 first quarter. Hayden Sproat top-scored for the Magic with 29 while Anton Pahl added 19. Marcus Tuwairua led the Whero scorers with 14.

Southland Boys High School also got out to a fast start and never looked back in beating MPMW Harleys Pango 78-55. Cody Stevens once again led the Boys High scoring with 25 with George Smith chipping in with 15. Braden Cole (23) and Ricardo Henry (18) played lone hands for Pango.

Meanwhile the Southland Sharks squad members stuffed the scoresheet as Rip City beat the Northeast Ballers 106-82. Tom Cowie (39) and Quake Webster (30) lead the charge for Rip City, with Ryan Gutsell also playing a crucial part in the win thanks to his 22. Ethan Mitchell balled out for the Ballers in a losing effort, finishing the night with the highest tally of the round with 41 with Mitchel Robinson adding 19.
